Go gazing

For a stunning view of the jagged countryside, steep spurs and neat domes of knolls draped in exquisitely manicured tea bushes, sunrise & sunset or the flat river plains far below the view points in this little tourist town can get a bit too irresistible. The ‘Kawlay Dara’ is one such high-spot which could make one feel up in the clouds. A stroll (about a twenty-minute walk) up to it could offer an exhilarating moment or one could even hitch a pony or a cab ride until a certain distance and then trudge up to it. As glimpses of the rising sun or the fiery sunset, the breathtaking landscape all around and the plains far below begin to materialize life trails on to a different tune. Another such leisure spot is the ‘Rameetay Dara’ where one could merely laze about and watch on for hours. A half-an-hour walk away from the main hub one could access it half way by a cab or enjoy a pony ride right up to it. The other gaze point at ‘Tingling’ enroute the Siliguri-Mirik Himalayan highway about 6 Km from Mirik proffers a fascinating view of a unique tea-bush draped landscape.

Salamander Habitat

The swampland around the lake premises is also an ideal home of the elusive Himalayan Salamander that happen to be a highly endangered species. One can catch sight of some of these creatures, if fortunate, creeping around the protected premises of the Social welfare forestry area adjacent to the lake especially during its breeding season in the monsoon.

Drooling Day Outs

Day outs can be fun while at Mirik. Be it the enchanting villages where life trods on rather surreptitiously, short easy treks on an exploration of the out country or these leisure spots, day outs could help one rediscover a place to its core. The two leisure spots at ‘Rang Bhang’ and ‘Manju’ provide opportunity for a serene getaway with family and friends. ‘Rang Bhang’ lies on the Rang Bhang river basin bounded by steep tea cultivated slopes on either side. One can unwind at the exquisite park and also cast a line to catch a few trouts. Organizing a picnic for groups or carrying a food pack could be yet another experience. Rang Bhang lies at about 12 Km from town and can be trekked or accessed by a jeep. Manju is another similar getaway and a well visited picnic spot.
